In honour of our Kentish roots, a county known as “The Garden of England”, we have created our very own Garden of England Roast Coffee. But unlike its namesake, the beans used in the making of this Coffee come from Java in Indonesia, not southeast England! Nevertheless, our Garden of England Roast Coffee is a fine, rich, medium-dark-roast, 100% Arabica bean Coffee of the highest quality. It consists of warm, spicy notes with a slight smokiness and a chocolatey finish. We have been roasting Coffees for over 30 years, our Garden of England Roast Coffee being one of our personal favourites during that time and now. It is roasted, as are all of our Coffees, using the latest state-of-the-art Neuhaus Neotec fluidised air-bed system, which primarily uses convection heat transfer to roast the beans. Once roasted, all of our Coffees, including Garden of England Roast Coffee, are packed fresh to order here in our Pluckley-based factory, nestled away within the captivating vistas of the Kentish countryside. Now, the question begs: is it time to try Garden of England Roast Coffee and embrace the spirit of our heritage? We know so. One would be hard-pressed to come across a Coffee of the same outstanding quality as a Java-grown Coffee. The island was the first region in Indonesia to grow Coffee following its introduction through Dutch colonists in 1699. However, during the 1880’s, a disease called Coffee rust decimated the plants’ population, an event that led to Javan Coffee farmers being driven out of the lowlands and onto the higher plateaus. Today, most Javan Coffee is still developed at higher altitudes, which in turn has a hugely positive effect on the quality of the beans grown there. Now, Java is Indonesia’s largest Coffee producer, best known for growing Arabica beans which, in particular, are stored for two to three years to allow them to develop a fuller, richer taste. Other Indonesian Coffee-growing regions include Sulawesi, Flores, East Timor, Bali and Sumatra, the latter of which produces likewise extremely popular Coffees. Combined, Indonesia’s Coffee plantations and estates cover an estimated 1.24 million hectares of the country. More than 90% of these plantations are owned by smallholder farmers who, on average, own 1 to 2 hectares of land each. So, what do you need to know about the roasting? Coffee beans pop, crack and expand when subjected to heats between 350 °F – 400 °F, a phenomenon known as the “first crack”. As a rule of thumb, lighter roasts are seldom roasted beyond the first crack, while medium-roasted Coffees are produced following the first crack but just before the “second crack” at heats from 410 °F – 430 °F. With Garden of England Roast Coffee, which as already mentioned, is a medium-dark-roasted Coffees, the beans can reach heats between 435°F and 445°F, often arriving during the middle of the second crack. Dark-roasted Coffees, meanwhile, are subjected to heats from 465°F – 485°F, which coincides with the end of the second crack, sometimes beyond. Only one question remains: what are you waiting for?
