Grown at high altitude and in limited quantity in a village behind Shitou Jiao, this varietal is considered a sub-cultivar of Huangzhixiang (also known as 狮头黄枝香). As such, it shares a common base in terms of gardenia-floral fragrance, fruit sweetness and great mouth feel. This terroir-specific varietal stands out in more ways than one. The initial steeps yield a bright pink rinse and first brew. Not only a treat for the eyes, this tea’s fragrance also offers a slight woody quality in the front, while a lychee sweetness takes over in the back. The texture is elastic and fills the mouth, as any charcoal roasted, high mountain tea should. A rare and uncommon varietal, this tea is a treat for any dancong lover.
