Kambaa Tea Estate The Kambaa Tea factory lies in the Kenyan district of Kiambu some 60 kilometres to the west of Nairobi. First established in 1974, it provides a factory facility for small Tea farmers locally. Indeed, over 5,400 smallholder farms supply Tea leaves to the central factory. The factory also offers the local farmers advice and help on plant husbandry, from fertilisers to use, to how to best prune and pluck the bushes, to keeping weeds at bay. Initially, Kambaa played host to some 10 million kilos of green leaf. Today that has increased to 15 million kilos. A centralised leaf collection system ensures the freshest leaves possible get to the factory. These controls put Kambaa in the top 20 of Kenyan Tea Gardens for quality, gaining high demand and good prices at auction in Mombasa. Brief History of Kenya Tea While Chinese Tea started in 2737 BCE, some 5,000 years ago, Kenya Tea only came into existence in 1903. And even then, the Briton who first planted the Camellia sinensis var assamica seeds, G.W.L. Caine, did so for ornamental purposes! It wasn’t until 1918 that Kenya Tea truly got off the ground. A Scotsman named Arnold Butler McDonell, after years of trying other crops, finally decided to try planting Indian Tea. It proved a tremendous success. Today, much of Kenya’s Tea grows in the highlands east of the Great Rift Valley. This indeed applies to our very own Kenya Kambaa Estate Tea BP1.
