Passion Fruit Guava and Mango Green Tea by Tea & Coffee | Teatico
Overview
Gunpowder green tea takes its name from the shape of the leaf: rolled into small, tight pellets that slowly uncurl once hot water hits them, releasing a grassy, earthy character as they open. Where the name itself comes from is less settled. One story credits an English clerk who thought the pellets resembled musket shot, another traces it to a Mandarin phrase for "freshly brewed" that sounds close to "gunpowder," and a third points simply to the crackling sound the leaves make while infusing. Most gunpowder tea is grown in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, though Guangdong, Anhui, Hunan and Fujian all produce their own versions, and Taiwan has its own take known as Formosa Gunpowder.
This blend takes that base and adds passion fruit, guava and mango, worked in as real fruit pieces alongside natural flavouring, which brings out notes of mandarin, lemon, date and honey against the tea's usual grassiness. Flavouring tea with fruit and spice is not a new idea; people have been doing it nearly as long as tea has existed, though this particular combination is a more recent addition to that long tradition. Steeped, it pours a light, yellow-green liquor with a smooth, fruity taste and grassy hints running underneath. Tea & Coffee packs it fresh to order.
Brew it with water left to cool to around 80°C and steep for two to three minutes. Most people drink it as is, though a little honey or lemon suits it if you want it. Green tea more broadly has long been credited with supporting heart health, helping with weight management and giving the immune system a boost, and some research points to benefits for cognitive health and a reduced risk of diabetes, though none of that should be mistaken for a guarantee.
