Tasting Notes: Dragonwell tea, known in China as Long Jing (literally “Dragon Well”), takes its name from an ancient well in Hangzhou where the tea was first cultivated. Legend holds that the well’s water was so pure and heavy it rippled like the back of a dragon. Today, Dragonwell is still made with traditional hand-firing techniques. After careful spring picking, the leaves are pan-fired in small batches, pressed flat against the hot wok, and gently rolled to lock in their signature jade-green color and chestnut-like aroma. This meticulous process is what gives Dragonwell its smooth sweetness, floral fragrance, and long, mellow finish. Our Dragonwell is crafted from the Long Jing #43 cultivar, grown in the pristine Qian Dao Hu (Thousand Island Lake) area of Chun’an County, Hangzhou. This lush region, with its humid climate, fertile soil, and misty hillsides, creates the ideal conditions for producing some of the finest Long Jing teas. The tradition of cultivating and handcrafting Dragonwell in this region stretches back hundreds of years, carrying with it a deep cultural heritage and artistry. Picked in the spring flush, the leaves are skillfully pan-fired by hand using traditional methods—fixation, rolling, and drying—to preserve their signature flat, jade-green shape and glossy finish. The resulting liquor is clear and bright, offering a smooth, sweet taste with a refreshing floral fragrance and a lingering, mellow aftertaste. Elegant in appearance and refined in flavor, this Dragonwell captures the essence of its terroir: a tea that is as storied as the landscape it grows in, and as timeless as the craft behind it.
