An iconic taste of the season, Darjeeling First Flush tea is eagerly awaited each spring. These light-bodied, distinctive teas are produced in small quantities for just a few weeks, usually beginning in April; only the new young buds and first leaves are hand-harvested, and they undergo a unique hard withering process. This early lot (DJ5) is from the Gopaldhara Estate, which lies at the western edge of the region with elevations from 5,500 to 7,000 feet. Light and bright, the tea boasts aromas of daisies and roasted carrots, and evokes fresh vegetable flavors: asparagus sprinkled with lemon, a glass of cucumber water. A crisp, bitter note at the finish lends a refreshing, amaretto-like quality to the cup.
