Overview
This amami-rich tea, known as "the jewel dew" due to its pale green infusion, is a highly prized, organic, shade-grown tea which offers a unique flavour of subtle sweetness. Gyokuro Asahi Green Tea is a rare and exceptional Japanese tea. Unlike most Sencha, which comes from the Camellia Sinensis Yabukita variety, Gyokuro is made from the Asahi cultivar. This tea is primarily produced in the Asahina region of Shizuoka prefecture, one of Japan's leading areas for Gyokuro production. What sets Gyokuro apart is its unique cultivation process. The tea plants are shaded for around three weeks under dark netting before harvest, unlike standard Sencha, which is grown in full sunlight. This shading method reduces tannic acid while boosting caffeine and amino acids, particularly theanine, resulting in a smooth, rich flavor. The leaves themselves are deep green, offering a distinctive Japanese tanginess. Gyokuro brews an umami-rich cup, perfect for moments of peace and relaxation. It can be steeped two to three times and is best brewed at a lower temperature than most green teas to fully appreciate its delicate flavor.
