This 2025 release of Organic Gyokuro crafted by Nishi-san for Rishi Tea is something truly special. From the moment we cupped it at the Nishi tea garden this year, we knew it was a tea worth sharing. Nishi-san has worked tirelessly to produce Gyokuro using organic methods—one of the most challenging teas to grow organically due to its meticulous shading and cultivation requirements. From time to time, we cherry-pick a small lot of organic Gyokuro, but it is rare that we select one for our Garden Direct collection. During the spring harvest season, the Rishi team tasted the aracha (unrefined tea) and decided to age it in cold storage for several months to allow the flavors and aroma to mature, harmonize, and mellow. The result is a tea that represents the pinnacle of Nishi-san’s craftsmanship—what we believe to be his finest organic Gyokuro to date. This batch reveals rich umami depth and a smooth, velvety texture uncommon in organic Gyokuro. Its flavor balances an intense mountain energy and aroma with a deep, savory sweetness. The taste is satisfyingly smooth, offering an exquisite broth-like sensation. Notes of kombu, sweet cream, and alpine meadow highlight Nishi-san’s artistry and the purity of his organic farming methods.
