Da Hong Pao ~ Big Red Robe Oolong Tea Da Hong Pao ~ Big Red Robe Oolong Tea, Da Hong Pao, or often called Big Red Robe is a traditional roasted Wuyi Rock Oolong from the Northern part of Fujian Province in China. The high fire treatment gives Da Hong Pao its specific smoky and mineral character. The dark leaves produce an amber liquor that has a long lasting, smooth, roasted flavour with sweet notes of exotic flowers. There is only 400 grams (not kilograms) of true Da Hong Pao produced each year from the last remaining three Da Hong Pao tea bushes in the world. This scant harvest of the real thing is reserved for high ranking officials in China. If it was to appear on the open market the price would be 10's of thousands of GBP or more per 10 grams. This Da Hong Pao falls into the category of an excellent fermented Red Oolong that was created by cloning the original Da Hong Pao. The high fire treatment gives Da Hong Pao its specific smoky and mineral character. The dark leaves produce an amber liquor that has a long lasting, smooth, roasted flavour with sweet notes of exotic flowers. Keep the leaves damp, not in standing water, and try several brews from one lot of leaves, keeping brewing all day!
