Overview
Best pick • solid green choice from Chiran, Kagoshima, Chiran, Kagoshima
Pairing: sushi, steamed vegetables, or citrusy salads

Description Chiran is the name of a town in Kagoshima prefecture in the southern island of Kyushu. Chiran has a warm and humid climate, with deep mists that contribute to this tea's flavor. The soil in this area is unique because it is made of volcanic ash from an active volcano, Sakurajima. This makes the soil particularly good for growing tea. Den's Fukamushi Sencha Chiran is also unique because it's made of a special cultivar, Asatsuyu. Asatsuyu is often described as being, "like gyokuro", even though it is sencha. It brews up a beautiful, deep green color that is reminiscent of jade. For an in-depth discussion of the terroir, health benefits, and production of fukamushi sencha varieties, please check out our fukamushi blog post.
