The Beidou (or "North Star") cultivar is a direct descendant of true Da Hong Pao ("Grand Scarlet Robe"), and was originally produced in the 1990's from cuttings of the Da Hong Pao mother plants. Nowadays, as the mother plants themselves are no longer actively harvested for tea production, descendant clonal cultivars like Beidou offer the closest way possible to experience the fabled taste of authentic Da Hong Pao. Our Heritage Beidou is produced near Ma Tou Yan ("Horse Head Cliff") in the Zhengyan ("True Cliff") district — the oldest and most revered micro-terroir within the Wuyi Mountain region. Each batch is meticulously hand-crafted from carefully selected leaves, then finished in the traditional style with several "heritage" roasts over longan charcoal. The use of real fruitwood charcoal (versus the more commercially expedient electric roasting used for many modern Wuyi oolongs) creates a far more layered and balanced finish. The resulting tea brilliantly distills the spirit of this centuries-old tea growing region. Each infusion offers the classic, roasted richness that we expect from a Wuyi oolong. But it’s the balance of this tea that sets our Heritage Beidou apart: at the same time rich, viscous, sweet, floral, and fruity – each characteristic distinct, but balanced and in harmony with the others. This is Wuyi oolong in its purest form, and an absolute must for any lover of this style. 1g per 1oz at 195°F for 2m This brewing method is ideal for Wuyi Oolongs and robust black teas, producing a rich and satisfying brew while maintaining a smooth texture and finish.
